Prep for machining – remove core plugs and most galley plugs, jet wash, Magnaflux if iron, inspect critical areas and check bore size’s
Both stock and high performance valve jobs include cleaning, checking for cracks, media blasting, inspection of the complete head, guides, valves and springs. Valves are ground, hand polished and tips ground. Seats are cut on a SUNNEN VGS20 seat and guide machine with a single blade 3 angle cutter. Valve lengths are measured and cut to proper tip heights. Heads are than hand washed and reassembled checking springs and using new seals of your choosing.
We also offer performance valve jobs, our standard valve job is 3 angles, performance valve jobs can be 5 or more angles which improve flow. valves are lapped in and back cut, spring pressures are balanced. Larger valves can be installed, we can do porting and polishing, old school heads can be set up for screw in rocker studs and guide plates.
V/8 and V/6 blocks are all done with a CBN or PCD single bladed cutter to achieve the proper RMS finish. V/6 and V/8 blocks are set on the mains and cut square side to side and matched end to end. Most inline blocks can be done the same way but not all. Deck height can be set to a specified dimension for performance applications.
Pistons are measured and a clearance is determined, a ring choice is made. The block is bored to .005 under the final size and than finish honed with the SUNNEN CV616 cylinder hone to the finished size. NOTE torque plate honing is available for additional cost.
If one or several cylinders are damaged or worn beyond use, a sleeve can be installed to repair the block to usable condition. Cracks, rust pitting, holes, wear, and even a block that is at the max oversize can usually be repaired with one or several sleeves. We can install standard straight wall sleeves or top hat sleeves.
Rods are cleaned, inspected and numbered. Bolts are pressed out; rod and cap are both cut. The bolts installed are inspected or replaced, the threads are lubricated, hand torqued and honed to proper size. The bushings are pressed in place and honed to fit your pins with the proper clearance.
Done in house with a STEWART WARNER balancer. All pistons are balanced +/- half of one gram unless otherwise noted. Connecting rod big end and rod total weight are balanced +/- half of one gram unless otherwise noted. Engines that require it have a bobweight bolted on and are balanced on our Stewart Warner balancer.
Repairs on cast iron is done by the pinning method or sometimes welding. Aluminum heads are TIG welded, we v-out the crack and weld. All crack repairs are pressure tested to insure a leak free repair. Broken bolts/taps/drill bits can de drilled out or ground out. Stripped or damaged bolt holes can be heli-coiled or repaired with a time sert.
Crankshaft grinding is not done in house [Micro polishing and size checking is]. We do offer this service by a shop we respect and use them for their quality.
Bring it all together, by having us assembly your complete engine. We can assemble a short block or a complete long block, stock or high performance. We do not offer vehicle installation, but can recommend many different shops that we work with based on your vehicle type and location.
